Why Do We Celebrate Onam?

Onam 2023

The Story Behind Onam

The origins of Onam can be traced back to Hindu mythology. According to the legend, Mahabali, a wise and generous king, ruled over Kerala. Under his rule, the kingdom thrived, and all the people were happy and prosperous. However, this prosperity worried the gods, who feared that Mahabali’s power would surpass their own.

To test the king’s humility, Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin. Vamana approached Mahabali and asked for a piece of land that he could cover in three steps. The generous king agreed, not realizing that Vamana was, in fact, Lord Vishnu himself. As soon as Mahabali granted the request, Vamana transformed into a giant, and covered the entire earth in one step, and the heavens in the second. He then asked Mahabali where he could place his third step.
